Genealogy is a wonderful and long term process that once you begin, you will never stop linking and finding information about those who were part of your family.

It is moving from the collector to the writer that is a difficult process for many researchers, if you are anything like me, you would have boxes and folders with much treasured letters, photos and memorabilia that you have collected.

While the collecting is an important part of the process, you have to consider what will happen to all of that information in those boxes once you are gone? Will it be used by others, or could it end up being thrown away?

Once you start to think about the years of research and collecting, you can see that one of the most important things is to start to compile the information that you have collected and present it in a book. In this day an age it does not have to be done through a printers, you can make a very well constructed book using software that is available.

Sharing the research and your findings will enable the knowledge to be shared through your family, and others will have the information should anything happen to your resources.

So many things get thrown away when people pass on, not realising the importance of the masses of boxes of papers, things are lost and gone forever. You have a chance to put together your research in a book that you can share with family and historical societies.

So don't keep putting off putting your content together, make a start, you might find that you end up with not only one book but many to share.

I agree that we need to spend time thinking about showcasing our genealogy research - and a book is a great way to do that. You can also post the results to your own blog, or make your own website, or add the details to your Ancestry.com account - or even make a video documentary with the material!

BTW, welcome to HubPages - I look forward to more hubs on genealogy from Down Under.

Hi JaneA,

Thank you for your comments and your welcome. There are so many great technology options for showcasing your genealogy, like the ones you have mentioned, being able to digitise what we have accumulated certainly can make sure that the records and the many hours of research will be available for future generations.

It is unfortunate that we still hear of stories of pictures, letters, documents that were in the hands of one person, now lost forever as they were thrown away or burnt as the person was an Aunt or Uncle who may have no other relatives alive, and those who do the clean up, do not see or understand the value of some old letters...etc.

So keep on researching, but start with one or two lines and start to compose the information you have obtained, and get your work of art to a library or historical society so that there is a copy for others to access in the future.

I will jump off my soap box now....

Regards

Jennifer
